Vol. 270 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Price.

67.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries when he will be in a position to announce the price of wheat for the present year.

The price of wheat for the present year will depend on the expected cost of imported wheat of similar quality. I understand that the flour millers and the IFA are negotiating on this matter. The intervention price in Ireland will be announced as soon as the EEC prices have been finalised.

Past tense.

I see that they have now announced the price for the coming year.

The millers and farmers.

I could easily see that they could come to such an arrangement because the anticipation of a price increase is very poor.

Is it not wrong that the Minister should be giving the House wrong information?

I am not giving the House wrong information. In what way does the Deputy suggest I am giving wrong information?

The Minister said there was no agreement but it was in the papers that agreement was reached.

I said there was no agreement in the EEC on the increase in price that would be given there.

The question was about here.

In fairness to the Minister he referred to the EEC but he was rather vague in letting us know whether he or his Department knew if an agreement had been reached here.

The answers were prepared a week ago and they were not revised.
