Vol. 270 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Charolais Bull Survey.

73.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will initiate a comprehensive survey of all AI Charolais bulls to discover which bulls are best for ensuring ease of calving.

All Charolais bulls in the AI service as well as bulls of other breeds are kept under constant review for such factors as ease of calving. In addition, in those AI areas where Charolais and other new breeds are being more intensively used, detailed comprehensive surveys were introduced in recent years, and as the usage increased, they were extended to other areas.

Could the Minister say how many of the bulls are showing ease of calving?

I could not. I am not sure the investigation has been going on long enough.

How long will it be until the Minister will have some report on that?

I imagine about six months.
