Vol. 270 No. 5

Written Answers. - Postmen's Allowances.

201.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the amount of the weekly allowance paid to postmen who use bicycles on postal delivery.

The weekly allowance paid to postmen using official bicycles on delivery is 24p.

Postmen who use private bicycles on delivery are paid allowances which vary with the amount of travelling involved. The maximum weekly allowance, for travelling of more than 24 hours a week, is 45p. The minimum allowance, for travelling of 12 hours weekly or less, is 24p.

202.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that postmen using their own motor-cycles on postal delivery are allowed only 35p per week to cover their expenses; and, if so, if he considers that such payments is adequate.

Postmen who use private motor-bicycles on postal delivery are permitted to do so under certain conditions at their own request. The posts themselves are scheduled as cycle posts and, as such, the allowances appropriate to cycle working are paid. These allowances vary according to the amount of cycle travelling required, the maximum and minimum allowances being 45p and 24p weekly respectively. The allowances are settled by agreement with the staff under the conciliation and arbitration scheme and it would not be appropriate for me to comment on them.
