Vol. 270 No. 5

Written Answers. - Replacement of Asgard.

439.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is satisfied that the proposed vessel to replace the Asgard training ship is a vessel suitable for young persons inexperienced in the ways of the sea and sailing craft.

The present position regarding the proposed new sail training vessel is that preliminary drawings and specifications are being prepared by a naval architect who has been appointed to design the vessel. These preliminary drawings and specifications will be available within a few weeks and they will then be considered by me and by the sail training committee. Any modifications considered necessary will be made. The vessel will be built to Lloyds' highest standards and I intend to be fully satisfied with the design and specifications before tenders for the construction of the vessel are invited.
