Vol. 270 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Worker Participation Aspects.

14.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is making any study regarding the quality of work and the satisfactions to be derived from it, with particular reference to the separation of the work, leisure and educational activities of the individual.

I have established within my Department a unit specifically to deal with all aspects of worker participation, including measures to improve the quality and design of jobs, the enlargement and enrichment of jobs, and the creation of autonomous work groups.

I might mention that the Government will co-operate closely with the proposal of the Council of Ministers of the EEC to establish an action programme aimed at the humanisation of the living and working conditions of workers. Indeed, this programme reflects proposals submitted by the Government to the EEC Commission in the matter.

While we in this country can benefit from an examination of what is happening in other countries, it is essential that the measures we take must be relevant to the Irish social, economic and political situation.
