Vol. 270 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Overflying.

15.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware of recent instances of overflying by Aer Lingus at Shannon; and if he will take steps to terminate this practice.

16.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will make a statement on the recent over-flying by two Aer Lingus transatlantic flights at Shannon Airport.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 15 and 16 together.

In accordance with Government policy, Aerlínte scheduled services are required to make a landing at Shannon in both directions. Since the end of January, the company's aircraft have overflown Shannon on six occasions because of the abnormal weather conditions. The decision was taken in each case by the commander of the aircraft with whose discretion in matters involving safety neither I nor the company can properly interfere.

Is the Minister aware that the over-flying of Shannon by Aer Lingus on different occasions is a source of great concern to employees in Shannon? Is he further aware that shortly after one of those over-flights an Air Canada aircraft landed?

I am, yes, and I think this is of concern not alone to the employees of Shannon Airport but also to Aer Lingus and to the Government. The Government have insisted that unless safety considerations arise all aircraft flying east or west must land at Shannon.
