Vol. 270 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Technical Bureau

129.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is proposed to fill vacancies which exist in the Technical Bureau of the Garda Síochána.

I am informed by the Commissioner that applications have already been invited for the vacancies in question and that they will be filled as soon as possible.

Did a great number of vacancies occur to bring about such degree of inefficiency in that particular branch of the Garda service? What is the reason for the delay in having them filled?

I would not agree with the Deputy that there were a great number of vacancies in that branch. I violently disagree with his suggestion that that branch has been inefficient. Its efficiency is a by-word in legal circles in this country.

The Minister misunderstood me. I did not mean that they were inefficient but that their efficiency was diminished through vacancies not being filled sufficiently quickly.

I am not aware of any undue delay in filling the vacancies. I understand the normal procedure has been complied with and interviews are about to take place.
