Vol. 270 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nurses' Remuneration.

32.

asked the Minister for Health why single nurses employed in a temporary capacity are not paid on the same basis as similarly qualified married nurses employed in a similar capacity.

Married nurses were not eligible to compete for permanent appointments in the health services until the abolition of the marriage bar. In view of the restriction on married nurses they were granted incremental credit as a special concession when taking up temporary appointments. Because single nurses could compete for permanent appointments the normal rule whereby temporary appointees are on the minimum of the scale applied to them. Now that the marriage bar has been abolished and married nurses may compete for permanent posts their conditions for temporary employment will be the same as for unmarried nurses.
