Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garage Zoning.

95.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he proposes to introduce legislation to ensure that all new garages must be located in areas zoned for industrial purposes and, if so, if this will restrict new repair service garages to areas which are generally well removed from the residential community; and if the modern service garage is regarded as a greater source of environmental pollution than a supermarket, laundry or any other service allowed to operate in a residential zone.

I do not propose to introduce legislation in this connection. The Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, provides planning authorities with adequate powers, when making or reviewing their development plan, to zone areas for particular development having regard to local needs and circumstances.
