Vol. 271 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat Prices.

14.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the amount of beef withdrawn from EEC countries in order to maintain minimum prices; its effects on the retail price of meat; and the quantity of beef imported from outside the EEC.

I have no up-to-date particulars but a total figure of 33,000 metric tons of beef purchased under the permanent intervention arrangements was mentioned at a recent EEC meeting. While the purchase of beef into intervention is a price support measure, its effect on retail meat prices cannot readily be quantified.
