Vol. 271 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clare Fish Landing Facilities.

35.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has any proposals for the provision of landing facilities for fishermen at Doonbeg, County Clare.

Proposals for the provision of landing facilities for fishermen at Doonbeg are being actively examined in my Department at present. I am not yet in a position to say what the outcome may be but I am arranging to have the matter dealt with as expeditiously as possible.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of the danger to fishermen at Doonbeg because of the lack of proper facilities? Could the Parliamentary Secretary give any indication of how soon he expects to be in a position to reach a decision on this matter?

I cannot give an indication as to a date but as the Deputy is probably aware a meeting was held in Doonbeg on 11th February and was attended by local Dáil Deputies, by local people and by representatives of the Department and of An Bord Iascaigh Mhara. The reports are being examined.

How soon will a decision be reached?

I cannot commit myself to any particular time but I can answer the Deputy——

Will a decision be reached within six months or might it not be reached for two years or even ten years?

Would the Parliamentary Secretary request the Board of Works to undertake the necessary costing of the landing facilities and of the provision of a pier adequate to cope with the increases in fish catches in the area?

That matter is being attended to.

That is no answer.

(Interruptions.)
