Vol. 271 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pier Improvements.

33.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has any plans for the improvement and extension of small piers, including the provision of public lighting, along the coastline of the Beara Peninsula, County Cork, to facilitate increased landings by part-time fishermen in the area.

Proposals for improvement works at a number of fishery landing places on the Beara Peninsula and adjacent islands are being examined by my Department at present but at this stage I am not in a position to say what works may eventually be approved for execution.

34.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will make a substantial grant available for the renewal and improvement of the Reeheen pier at Loher, Waterville, County Kerry, which was completely wrecked and mostly washed away during the recent storms, in view of the fact that there are ten young fishermen affected for whom an improved lay-out is necessary together with an approach road.

As a result of inquiries which have been made by my Department I am satisfied that a grant for the improvement of Reeheen Pier, Loher, Waterville, County Kerry, would not be justified in the fishery interest.
