Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Mill Redundancies.

163.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of forthcoming redundancies in a mill in County Cork (name supplied); and the steps he is taking to provide alternative industry in the area in order to reemploy the redundant workers.

I am not in a position to say whether or not redundancies are likely to arise in the mill in question. In regard to new employment opportunities, the position is that a number of new projects at various stages of negotiation and development in the Cork city and surrounding area are expected to provide a substantial number of jobs.

I am surprised to hear the Minister say that he is not aware that there are redundancies forthcoming in this particular firm. In view of the fact that the area of Blarney has for many years been recognised as an industrial area rather than giving a general answer in relation to the Cork city area would the Minister say whether there are in the Department any proposals for the provision of alternative industry or further industry for the Blarney area?

I would be prepared to communicate with the Deputy on this subject.

I will accept that.
