Vol. 271 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Redevelopment.

81.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the proposed redevelopment of Hollyfield and Mount Pleasant Buildings, Dublin.

The administration of their housing estate is primarily the responsibility of Dublin Corporation. I understand, however, that in Hollyfield Buildings two blocks comprising single rooms have been demolished and the site has been surfaced for a play area. The four remaining blocks comprise self-contained flats and provide accommodation for 47 families. The question of redevelopment of these buildings in conjunction with some adjoining property is being examined by the corporation.

As regards Mount Pleasant Buildings, two blocks comprising single rooms have also been demolished and the site used as a play area. The five remaining blocks comprise self-contained flats and provide accommodation for approximately 150 families. In view of the demand for housing in the city area the corporation do not propose to demolish these buildings but to lower the density of occupation and to improve and repair them as far as possible.

Will the original proposals the corporation had some years ago to develop these two sites be continued in the same way as St. Michael's in Inchicore was developed?

I have given a full reply to the Deputy and I have nothing to add.

There were proposals and I am trying to find out if there are any changes.

I have not got the original proposals here but the Deputy will be aware from what I have already told him that in Hollyfield Buildings two blocks comprising single rooms have been demolished and the site has been surfaced for a play area; the four remaining blocks comprise self-contained flats and provide accommodation for 47 families. The question of redevelopment of these buildings in conjunction with some adjoining property is being examined by the corporation. In the second case there are approximately 150 families in the five remaining blocks and the city commissioners do not propose to demolish these buildings; they propose to lower the density of occupation and improve and repair the buildings as far as possible. This would be in line with the request I made to local authorities to try to maintain existing housing stock where it can be either maintained or repaired.

The Minister must be aware that in Islandbridge, St. Michael's estate, and so forth, development has been most successful and the accommodation is much sought after. We would like to see the same thing happening in Rathmines.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the proposed redevelopment of Moore Street/ Parnell Street, Dublin.

As I indicated in reply to a previous question from the Deputy this is a matter for Dublin Corporation. I understand that tenders submitted for the carrying out of phase I of the redevelopment project are at present being examined by the corporation and that it is hoped to make a decision shortly.

Will this development take place as a result of imported money by multi-national investment companies?

That is a separate question and I could not answer the Deputy.

I was just wondering what proportion of Irish capital would be invested and what proportion of non-national capital.

I suggest the Deputy take the matter up with his colleagues in the corporation.

I am not a member of the corporation.

But he surely has somebody on the corporation who will look after it for him.
