Vol. 271 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Local Authority Elections.

31.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he intends to introduce amending legislation to allow certain employees of local authorities to stand for election to local authorities in the June, 1974, elections; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is my intention to seek leave to introduce legislation on this matter during the present week and I hope the Oireachtas will see fit to pass the measure in time to allow its provisions to apply in relation to the forthcoming local elections. At present an employee of a local authority is disqualified for membership of that authority and, in addition, a member of a local authority may not be employed in any capacity by that authority. Under the Bill it is proposed that the electoral disqualification will be removed altogether and there will be provision whereby the prohibition of employment may be lifted in relation to certain classes of employees.
