Vol. 271 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Primary School Appointments.

4.

asked the Minister for Education if he will request primary school managers to consult school principals when making appointments to their schools.

The appointment of teachers in national schools rests with the managers. My Department's function is to ensure that the person proposed is qualified in accordance with the requirements of the rules for national schools. I understand that in practice it is normal procedure for most managers to consult the school principals before making appointments to their schools.

Would the Minister agree that where the principal is very enthusiastic about the new curriculum he should be able to question a potential teacher on his staff as to the attitude of that teacher to the new curriculum?

Mr. R. Burke

Under the rules the manager is charged with the direct government of the school and the appointment of teachers subject, of course, to the Minister's approval. Having said that, I accept that it would be useful—indeed desirable— for this kind of consultation to take place and I understand that in many, many cases it does, in fact, take place.

Not in all of them.

Mr. R. Burke

Not in all. I accept that.
