Vol. 272 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Road.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position in regard to the proposed new road from Cork to Mallow, County Cork.

I indicated in reply to a question on 19th July, 1973, that Cork County Council's proposal to adopt a new alignment for various sections of the road, including a 12½ mile section between Cork city and Mourneabbey, had been approved in August, 1972, and that outline plans for the scheme were awaited. That is still the position and I cannot say, therefore, when construction work will commence.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary foresee that the threatened dispute with local authority engineers will delay these plans any further?

The Deputy is introducing new matter.

We are waiting for Cork County Council to send proposals. The engineers' dispute is not in question.

In view of the fact that sanction was given a year and a half ago and that no plan has yet been submitted to the Minister's Department, is there not some obvious reason why there is a delay and expedition is necessary? Would the Parliamentary Secretary indicate the reason for the delay?

The Department is waiting for Cork County Council to send up proposals. It is up to the members of Cork County Council to make sure that the Cork officials do their duty.

I was suggesting that there is some reason for this and is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of any reason?

My Department have been waiting a year and a half for proposals.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary know that this is one of the most potentially dangerous roads in the country?

It is all that.
