Vol. 272 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Biscuit Prices.

67.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that biscuits manufactured in the Republic of Ireland may be purchased more cheaply in Northern Ireland than on the home market; and if these biscuits may be imported free of duty.

I understand that biscuits have been sold slightly cheaper in Northern Ireland than in this part of the country or in Britain, which also has an export trade in biscuits to Northern Ireland. Exports from Britain include biscuits sold under the Jacob name and our exports to Northern Ireland represent a small proportion of the total market there.

Under the terms of the Finance Act, 1933, biscuits exported from here may be reimported without payment of duty on production of satisfactory evidence that they were manufactured here.

Under the EEC trade system exports to Northern Ireland of biscuits manufactured here would qualify for a subsidy but on reimport would be subject to a levy.
