Vol. 272 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Polling Booths Venue.

91.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is intended to use the town hall in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin for polling booths in the forthcoming local elections; and, if not, the alternative venue that will be made available to the electorate.

92.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the physical hazard to disabled persons and the aged in attempting to negotiate the stairs leading to the proposed polling booths in the town hall, Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin in the coming local elections; and the action, if any, he intends taking in the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 91 and 92 together.

The selection of premises to be used for voting at the forthcoming local elections in Dún Laoghaire is a matter for the returning officer, who is the town clerk. I understand from him that it is not his intention to use the town hall for this purpose and that he is in the process of selecting a more suitable premises.

I am very grateful indeed to the Parliamentary Secretary for that information. It is the culmination of a long campaign on my part to have the Dún Laoghaire town hall closed, in the interests of the community, for polling purposes. I have a fairly good idea of where the alternative site will be, as I suggested it to the town clerk.
