Vol. 272 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rates Waiver Schemes.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of persons who benefited in each local authority area in which rates waiver schemes were adopted in 1972-73 and 1973-74.

The reply to this question in respect of the year 1972-73 is in the form of a tabular statement, which I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate with the Official Report. The information requested in respect of the year 1973-74 is not yet available in the Department.

Following is the statement:

I already have the figures for 1972-73 as the Minister gave them to me previously. Could he state when the figures for 1973-74 will be available so that I will not put down the question prematurely again.

I will let the Deputy have the figures as soon as they are available.

Could I expect them within a week, a month or a year?

It is extremely difficult to know because we depend on the local authorities who have been asked to supply those figures and have not done so yet. I have reminded them on two occasions and I have to wait until they come in.

I am sure the Minister is aware there has been a substantial reduction in the number of people who have benefited under this scheme introduced by Fianna Fáil some years ago.

No. As a matter of fact the opposite is the case. The position is that more people than ever are now benefiting by this scheme, as the Deputy will find when he gets the figures.

How can the Minister state that when he has not got the figures?

Because of the fact that I have checked with individual local authorities who have supplied these figures. The evidence is contrary to what Deputy Molloy has said.

Would the Minister supply me with the figures from the local authorities who have already submitted them?

If Deputy Molloy wants them, of course I will.
