Vol. 272 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Monument Preservation.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is proposed to implement all or any of the resolutions passed at the Council of Europe Conference held in Zurich in July 1973 and which were designed to save Europe's monuments; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is not possible in reply to a question like this to deal with the great variety of matters covered by the Zurich conference resolutions but the general tenor of the resolutions is acceptable and I hope that it will be possible to implement many of the recommendations. Steps to conserve buildings and monuments are already being taken and consideration is being given to the possibility of securing improvements in legislation and other measures. The principal object of European Architectural Heritage Year is to stimulate public interest in the matter and this country is well advanced in the preparation of a suitable programme as our contribution to the year.
