Vol. 272 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Industries.

20.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of recent press reports, he will make a statement regarding the proposed Dupont factory at Ringaskiddy, County Cork.

I understand from the Industrial Development Authority that the Dupont company is still actively considering Ringaskiddy as a possible location for the proposed titanium dioxide plant and that negotiations between the company and the IDA are continuing.

Can the Minister give any indication when a definite decision will be made regarding Ringaskiddy as the site of the proposed factory?

I cannot give such an indication. This is a large investment and in an investment of this kind there are many considerations. In the end the decision has to be made by the company. We can only make the inducements and facilities as attractive as possible.

Without wishing to deny information which should properly be available to Deputies or the public, there are circumstances with the establishment of plants, such as the Dupont factory, where companies appreciate confidentiality. They also appreciate that the matter will be left with them until they have been able to reach a decision.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the present state of negotiations for a new industry in respect of Blarney, County Cork; and the plans that have been formulated for the factory space already available there.

I have been informed by the Industrial Development Authority that an industrial firm has made an offer to purchase the unoccupied factory in Blarney but that negotiations have not yet been finalised.

The industrial promoters involved are contemplating establishing a new industry in the premises with IDA support.

I understand this information has already been conveyed to the Minister's political organisation in the local area. Is that correct?

Firstly, it is incorrect. Secondly, this is an allegation which I very much resent. If any Deputy has the slightest evidence that I favour people of my political persuasion in matters of this kind, he has the right to bring it here. I challenge the Deputy on that. There is no such——

Is the Minister stating that this information has not already been conveyed to the particular organisation in his party in that area?

I am so stating.
