Vol. 272 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birr Factory.

36.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the IDA have yet accepted tenders for the erection of an advance factory at Birr, County Offaly; if so, if a contract has been allotted and when work will commence; the area of the factory in square feet; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

I understand that the Industrial Development Authority has placed a contract for the construction of an advance factory at Birr and, subject to planning permission, work is expected to commence towards the end of June. The factory will cover an area of 26,000 sq. ft. and its existence should enhance the prospects for further industrial development in the town.

In the absence of Deputy Enright, might I ask——

Is Deputy Enright not here?

No, he is not. I know Deputy Enright would like me to ask this question in order to draw attention to it. Are the Minister and the IDA satisfied that a 26,000 sq. ft. factory is the appropriate size for an area like Birr where there is such need for industrial development?

The question of providing industrial employment is unending but in the particular circumstances at this moment and in relation to certain inquiries, I think this is appropriate. I trust the judgment and the collective wisdom of the IDA in this matter and I am satisfied that that is their decision.
