Vol. 273 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shortage of Gardaí.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice if patrol cars are inoperative because of the shortage of gardaí.

The increase in demands on the services of the Garda Síochána can create problems in the deployment of men for particular duties and occasionally patrol cars in certain locations are not mobile when for one reason or another crews are not available to man them. The commissioner has informed me that this does not occur in the larger centres of population and he is satisfied that it is not presenting a major problem.

As the Deputy is aware, the Government decided last January to increase the overall strength of the force by a further 500, and over 100 of these have already been appointed.
