Vol. 273 No. 5

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Pig Production.

14.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries how direct Government aid to pig producers varies as between this country and England.

There is direct Government aid here, but not in England, for breed improvement through the accredited pig herd and pig progeny testing schemes. Also, the rates of grant for pig housing under the EEC farm modernisation scheme are some-what better here than in England.

In addition, there is at present a temporary subsidy on slaughtered pigs payable from the national Exchequer in England, which is matched by an identical subsidy payable in this country out of EEC funds.
