Vol. 273 No. 5

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Nuclear Powered Ships.

45.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if, in view of the rapidly changing situation, his Department will examine the economics of nuclear powered ships which could be added to the Irish fleet.

Examination of the economics of nuclear powered ships is primarily a matter for individual shipowners including Irish Shipping Ltd.

Very considerable further research and development and conclusion of international agreements in relation to such matters as safety, environmental matters and civil liability will be necessary before Irish Shipping Ltd. can contemplate the commercial operation of nuclear ships.
