Vol. 273 No. 5

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Drunken Driving.

81.

asked the Minister for Justice if the number of people prosecuted for drunken driving is increasing or decreasing.

I assume that the offences that the Deputy has in mind include not only offences of driving and being in charge of a mechanically propelled vehicle while drunk but also cases where the blood alcohol concentration is above the prescribed limit. I am informed that the figures for 1973, which will be published shortly in the report of the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána on crime for the year ended 30th September, 1973, will show an increase of the order of 34 per cent over the 1972 figure which was 2,472.
