Vol. 273 No. 5

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Availability of New Currency Notes.

97.

asked the Minister for Finance why new notes of £5 and other denominations are unobtainable.

Mr. Kenny

The Central Bank had informed me that, as a result of difficulties in bringing the bank's new note-printing centre at Sandyford, County Dublin, into service, the supply of new currency notes was temporarily disrupted. This made it necessary to keep notes in circulation somewhat longer than usual.

I understand from the bank that the problems are being overcome and it is expected that the issue of new notes will be resumed shortly.

Mr. T.J. Fitzpatrick

(Dublin Central): Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that there is a case for the introduction of a £2 note as the £1 note has been devalued so much in the last 12 months?

Mr. Kenny

Sin ceist eile.
