Vol. 273 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Law of the Sea Conference.

3.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if Ireland will make its own case to the World Conference on the Law of the Sea; and whether Ireland will join the EEC in a joint submission.

We will be making our own case. The Commission of the European Communities are not separately preparing any proposal for the Law of the Sea conference. Nor is it presently proposed that the EEC countries will make any joint submissions.

4.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has yet drawn up proposals at (1) geographical, (2) economic, (3) ecological and (4) political and legal levels for the Conference on the Law of the Sea.

The Government have presently under consideration the policy to be adopted by the Irish delegation at the Law of the Sea Conference. This delegation will be led by Ambassador Cremin, for many years the Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations. The Deputy will, I think, not expect me to make any more detailed statement on our proposals at this stage.
