Vol. 273 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Estates.

14.

asked the Minister for Lands why the Land Commission did not acquire the Forrest estate, Cregane, Lombardstown, Mallow, County Cork, for division among local small farmers; and whether the Land Commission will reopen the case and receive a deputation from the local farmers.

(Cavan): As the Deputy is aware, the determination of lands to be acquired is a matter that is reserved exclusively to the lay commissioners.

However, I have made inquiries in the case he mentions and have ascertained that the lands were purchased by a young married man who intends to take up residence on and work them. In these circumstances, and having regard to the degree of congestion in the area, the Land Commission decided to leave the lands with the purchaser and not to move for their acquisition.

15.

asked the Minister for Lands the present position regarding the Doneraile estate, County Cork.

(Cavan): It is intended to develop the Doneraile estate as a forest and wildlife park and certain work preliminary to that objective has been undertaken during the past few years.
