Vol. 273 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Phoenix Park Wildlife.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give an estimate of the number of foxes breeding in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if weasels and red squirrels are to be found in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

Mr. Kenny

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 6 and 7 together.

No detailed study has been made of mammals other than deer in the Phoenix Park. Foxes, stoats — popularly known as weasels — and red squirrels are all known to be present. A scientific study would be necessary before numbers of animals breeding in the Park could be estimated and this will be undertaken in due course.

(Dublin Central): Would the Parliamentary Secretary agree that it probably would be advisable to have some record of the number of weasels and foxes in the park since there are many infants and young children moving around the park?

And the type of foxes.

There are weasels in other places too.

Mr. Kenny

And there are wily foxes in places other than the park.

And mongrel foxes.
