Vol. 274 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Barracks Conditions.

43.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to a report (details supplied) concerning the deplorable conditions in the prison cell at Eglinton Street Garda barracks, Galway; and if he proposes to take any action to improve these conditions.

Mr. R. Burke

I have seen the report mentioned. The renovation of the cells is part of an overall scheme of improvements which is under consideration for this station. I have requested the Office of Public Works to investigate the feasibility of dealing with the cell improvements in advance of the main scheme.

I am grateful to the Minister for his reply. I take it there will be prompt action to put this Garda barracks and the cell there in a proper condition. Is the Minister aware that since the highlighting of the condition of this prison cell it has been stated that several other prison cells in Garda barracks throughout the country are in a similar condition?

The Deputy ought not to enlarge the scope of the question.

Will the Minister bring it to the notice of his colleague, the Minister for Justice, that these statements have been made and that the matter should be investigated?

Mr. R. Burke

I will bring the Deputy's comments to the attention of the Minister.
