Vol. 274 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Louth School Accommodation.

36.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the provision of extra accommodation for primary school pupils in St. Mary's Parish, Drogheda, County Louth.

Three prefabricated classrooms have recently been provided at St. Mary's boy's school, Drogheda. My Department have asked the Office of Public Works for a report as to the provision of a five-classroom permanent extension at these schools.

Two prefabricated classrooms are to be provided at St. Mary's Convent (Fatima) girls' school and planning permission is awaited from the local authority. It is proposed to erect a new 16-classroom school to replace the existing school and the Reverend Manager has been asked to acquire a site.

A four-classroom permanent extension has been sanctioned for the Ballsgrove school and tenders for the scheme have been approved by the Office of Public Works. It has been decided to erect a new 16-classroom school at Rathmullan. Pending the provision of this school a four-classroom temporary prefabricated school is to be established on a temporary site close to Ballsgrove Church.

Is the Minister aware that parents in the area are very perturbed at not being able to secure places in the schools for their children for the coming school year?

Mr. R. Burke

In the whole area?

In the parish.

Mr. R. Burke

I am not aware that this is the case.

Is the Minister satisfied there will be sufficient places for all the children who desire to secure them in the coming school year?

Mr. R. Burke

In the absence of any further applications from the managers of the schools in question I take it there will be enough places.

Would the Minister make inquiries?

Mr. R. Burke

I certainly will.
