Vol. 274 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicle Inspections.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is intended to introduce compulsory periodic inspection of all motor vehicles to ensure road-worthiness.

While there is statutory authority for a scheme of compulsory periodic vehicle testing under the Road Traffic Acts, a scheme has not been introduced pending the completion and evaluation of a research project being undertaken by An Foras Forbartha at my Department's request. This project is designed to identify the incidence of vehicle defects and other relevant factors peculiar to Irish conditions which would have to be considered before a decision is taken on an appropriate scheme. I may add that work going on in the EEC at the moment is also of relevance.
