Vol. 274 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unclaimed Moneys.

39.

asked the Minister for Finance if any information is available on the amount of moneys lying unclaimed in Irish banks; and the plans the Government have to put such moneys to productive use.

I am advised by the Central Bank that they understand that the amount of moneys lying unclaimed in Irish banks is minimal. Such funds remain the liability of the banks concerned and must be met if claims are established. In the circumstances the Government have no plans for seeking to obtain the use of these funds. It will be appreciated that such funds are part of the total resources of the banks and the fact that they may be dormant in no way inhibits them from being employed in the same way as other balances with the banks.
