Vol. 274 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Pier.

14.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries when his Department will sanction a grant in respect of improvements to Kilcummin pier, Ballina, County Mayo.

The Department are at present considering alternative proposals for the improvement of the landing facilities at Kilcummin which have been put forward by the Office of Public Works. Some additional information has been sought from the OPW in connection with these proposals and when this is available it should be possible to reach a decision in this matter at an early date.

Would the Minister agree that an on-the-site meeting was held between the fishermen, the Office of Public Works and officials of the Minister's Department approximately 12 months ago and, in view of that, can he now give an indication when this work will start?

I gather the problem relates to technical information which the Office of Public Works still require and the reception of this information is delaying the work.

Would the Minister agree that this delay would not occur if the work was carried out by properly qualified individuals? The file has been passing hither and thither between the two for the past six months. It is simply a matter of extending the pier. There is no great technical difficulty.

The Deputy is making an argument.

Could the Minister give any indication of the technical question which has arisen in relation to this pier?

I am not in a position to give the nature of that technical information. If the Deputy inquires of the Office of Public Works he will get it.

They cannot go down beyond 20 feet.
