Vol. 274 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Central Bank Building.

6.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position with regard to the Central Bank building, Dame Street, Dublin; and if a planning appeal has been received and, if so, when a decision is likely.

The Central Bank building in Dame Street, Dublin, was the subject of a planning appeal which I decided in April. There is nothing at present before me in relation to this building.

Might I ask the Minister what he thinks will happen to the building eventually?

I have not the foggiest notion; it is a matter for Dublin Corporation to decide.

They would not have any power to decide that, would they?

They are the planning authority; it is up to them to ensure that the planning instructions given and the decision given by the Department are carried out. It is not the function of the Department to carry out the decision; it is the function of Dublin Corporation.

Will they have to lower the building?

If they can think of some other way of taking the top off it without lowering it then they are entitled to do so.

Who will meet the cost?

That is a matter I would not have to decide. But I should like to assure everybody that neither the ratepayers nor taxpayers of this country will pay for it.
