Vol. 275 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - St. Conleth's, Daingean, Offaly.

42.

asked the Minister for Finance the present proposals in connection with St. Conleth's, Daingean, County Offaly.

Mr. Kenny

The Land Commission are considering the acquisition of the lands attached to St. Conleth's, and an early decision is expected. The future of the buildings is being examined.

Have the Office of Public Works handed over any of the extensive recreational facilities to the townspeople of Daingean? An application was made last year. Has it been responded to?

Mr. Kenny

Two houses at the entrance have been disposed of, one to the Oblate Fathers as a local house of residence, and the other to the occupant who has lived in it with his family for many years. There have been representations by the Daingean tennis club and, on their behalf, by Deputy Flanagan and Deputy McDonald for the use of the courts and amenities in the grounds. They have been told that their interest has been noted but that a decision on the future use of the property has not yet been made and that the question of the availability of the sports facilities to local interests must await this decision.

Surely it would be possible at least to set them on a year to year basis until a final decision is made. My information is that there are handball alleys and tennis courts there and they are falling into disuse.

Mr. Kenny

I will have the matter expedited to the best of my ability.
