Vol. 275 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clogherhead Harbour, Louth.

47.

asked the Minister for Finance the plans he has to develop the harbour at Clogherhead, County Louth.

Mr. Kenny

The Commissioners of Public Works have no plans to develop Clogherhead pier but it would not, of course, be for them to initiate such a proposal.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the pier at Clogherhead is in a dangerous condition and that the livelihood of the Clogherhead fishermen and many others involved in the fishing industry depends on urgent action being taken? Would the Parliamentary Secretary use his endeavours to see that action is taken as quickly as possible?

Mr. Kenny

We have no involvement in this pier. This is a matter for the county council and for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Surely the Parliamentary Secretary would agree that the pier is in such a bad condition that it is far beyond the capacity of the county council to deal with it. In such circumstances, could he not take responsibility for it? It is quite obvious that, in a relatively short time, if there is a bad winter, there will not be a pier there.

Mr. Kenny

I understand about the pier but this is a matter for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. Until we get the authority and the money from them to implement their proposal we can do nothing.

I will put down a question to the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.
