Vol. 275 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pig Population.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the pig population on 30th September in 1972, 1973 and 1974.

An enumeration of pig stocks is not carried out in respect of 30th September. The latest information available relates to 1st August, 1974 when total pig numbers were estimated at 849,100 compared with 1,064,300 on 1st August, 1973. Corresponding figures are not available for August, 1972 as the new series of August inquiries was introduced in 1973.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary and the Government not agree that this is a disastrous fall in the number of pigs arising out of the failure to implement some of the suggestions put forward by this side of the House?

This was all thrashed out last week.

The Deputy is now embarking on an area of policy.

If the Deputy has any further questions, he should address them to the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.
