Vol. 275 No. 8

Ceisteanna——Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Training Requirements.

14.

asked the Minister for Labour if he has made any arrangements with or proposals to the vocational committees of Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon for the training of a labour force which will be available for employment in the proposed factories in those areas when these factories are completed.

AnCO—the industrial training authority—are constantly in touch with the Industrial Development Authority about training requirements of new and existing industries. There is an AnCO training centre in Sligo and, in addition, AnCO co-operate with the vocational education committees in Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon in providing training facilities. Many new industries provide training themselves with the help of the IDA grants and advice from AnCO.

Does the Minister agree that AnCO and the IDA are making as much use as they might of the vocational schools for this purpose?

I think they are but there is a constant discussion about this matter. There is satisfactory enough co-operation between the vocational authorities and AnCO in various parts of the country.

Is the Minister satisfied there is no overlapping?

That point has been made but I do not think in practice that there is any overlapping.
