Vol. 276 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Calf Market.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the steps being taken by him to provide a market for calves next spring.

As a result of the decision of the Council of Ministers in October to change the representative rate for the Irish pound the monetary compensatory amount charges on exports of calves were substantially reduced. This has already resulted in an increase in exports to Italy and third countries.

At my request also, the EEC Commission last week agreed to propose restitutions for the export to third countries of calves and other cattle which do not qualify for the slaughter premium. These restitutions should further stimulate the export of calves and help the market situation here, if they are agreed.
