Vol. 276 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nationalisation of Industries.

53.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if nationalisation is permitted by the Treaty of Rome; and if he will indicate the industries that have been nationalised in Europe since 1962.

The Rome Treaty allows nationalisation of industrial undertakings. Certain of its provisions are aimed at avoiding abuse of public ownership by ensuring that State undertakings are subject to compliance in the same way as private undertakings with the various rules contained in the Treaty with particular reference to such matters as fair competition. There is no official list of nationalised industries.

Would the Minister answer the second part of my question? Is he aware of any company in the EEC that has been nationalised since 1962?

I am not in a position to answer that but I know that there have been such instances. I cannot gives names and dates.

It is very much an exception if there has been.
