Vol. 276 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Adult Education Report.

68.

asked the Minister for Education the immediate steps he intends to take to implement the recommendations of the Murphy report on adult education.

Mr. R. Burke

Following publication of the report Adult Education in Ireland views were sought from some 100 interested agencies and organisations concerning the various recommendations contained in the report. Views are still awaited from some of the organisations but I anticipate that they will be received in the near future. The question of the appropriate measures to be taken for the future expansion of the adult education programme will be examined in the light of the recommendations contained in the report and the views received from the various interested groups.

Does the Minister agree with the idea in the Murphy report that finance must come from his Department for the development of adult education or does he adhere to the belief that adult education should pay for itself?

Mr. R. Burke

I decline to answer that question because it would force me to make a decision now on something which has not yet been decided.
