Vol. 276 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondhand Cars.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is prepared to make regulations whereby any vendor of secondhand cars will be required to give a warranty of fitness or a guarantee for a limited period.

As I said in reply to a similar question by the Deputy on the 31st October, 1973, this matter does not come within the scope of the Road Traffic Acts.

The purpose of the question is to ask the Minister to take steps whereby people who purchase secondhand cars—this will occur more and more in the future—will have some form of guarantee of warranty that the car is fit to drive?

It is not in my power to do so. It does not come into my Department.

In his planning legislation before the House the Minister has introduced a very wide range of amendments and surely he could have introduced provisions along the lines of the question?

God knows the work of the Department is wide enough already. This is a matter for the Department of Industry and Commerce and I suggest the Deputy put down a question to that Minister.
