Vol. 276 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Access for Disabled

139.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has reviewed the code of instructions relating to access for the disabled to buildings; and if he will indicate if any modifications are found to be desirable in the light and developments since these proposals were first introduced.

Mr. Kenny

The code of practice relating to the access for the disabled to buildings has been reviewed and so far experience in practice has not disclosed the need for any significant modification in the code. The matter will continue to be kept under review.

Is the code being put into effect in all public buildings being constructed by the Office of Public Works?

Mr. Kenny

Yes. If there is any modification that might be beneficial to those people required it will be done.

Will this apply to schools and Garda barracks?

Mr. Kenny

I do not think I can answer that. They will be in the plans and specifications and when they come before the Office of Public Works it will be their duty to see that they are carried out in that way.

In other words, the Office of Public Works will not be overruled in this regard by other Ministers for the sake of saving a small amount of money?

Mr. Kenny

I do not think so.
