Vol. 276 No. 10

Transport (No. 2) Bill, 1974: Fifth Stage.

Question proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

I understand that under past legislation the hotel section of CIE, Óstlanna Éireann Teoranta, was set up as a separate company to operate separately. However, I understand that it is being reabsorbed into CIE. If this is so, I should like the Minister to investigate whether this legislation under which the separate company was set up is now being ignored. What is the position with regard to this company being brought back under CIE? If this has happened without any reference to the legislation it is a very serious matter.

It is under consideration whether they are being brought back in. One of the points that will have to be investigated is the legislation in that regard. Certainly, I will not do anything against any legislation passed in this House.

(Dublin Central): Is there any particular reason why they should be brought in? I would prefer to see them having autonomy and, if they make a profit, let them show it; likewise, if they make losses. Is there a reason why they must be brought in?

No, there is no reason why they should be brought in. But the losses incurred by Óstlanna Éireann Teo. in the last few years have been quite extensive because of one large investment made about four years ago. Consideration is being given at present to the question of whether these losses should be met through the ordinary CIE subventions, or whether there should be another method of financing them under the CIE hotels board. There is no finality about it yet; nothing except a thought or consideration as to what is the best way to approach these losses.

Will we have an opportunity of discussing any changes —such as Deputy Barrett has suggested—in this House before any decisions are made?

If legislation is required of course Deputies will have an opportunity.

Is legislation required?

We do not know that yet. That is why the matter is being examined at present. If legislation has to be changed the House will have to discuss it.

Question put and agreed to.

This Bill is certified a Money Bill in accordance with Article 22 of the Constitution.
