Vol. 276 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - AI Services.

13.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries why the artificial insemination service is charging a different rate in respect of the bull "Hamlet" of the Simmental breed in view of the fact that the initial fee is £3 and the fee is £1 for the next two repeats and subsequently £3 again.

The bull "Hamlet" is in the Clondalk in AI station which is operated by the Dublin District Milk Board and I understand that, because of the excessive demand for this bull service can only be provided on a special or nominated fee basis at the rates mentioned.

Is it a satisfactory bull that warrants so many repeats?

It is possible that he is a three-act.

This bull is regarded as one of the best in the country and it is not unusual, it is done throughout the service, to have a nominated bull costing more.

Apparently, a play without the prince even in these days of inflation requires an increased fee.

And repeats.

14.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will ensure that any increase in the cost of insemination will not be passed on to the farmer.

The fixing of the level of fees for insemination is a matter for the AI bodies. I do not propose to subsidise these fees.

Would the Minister like to comment on the demand for the AI service at present?

Is the Minister satisfied with the demand?

If the demand for this sort of service has dropped I am not satisfied but there are very good reasons

Has the demand dropped?

It has dropped because of the collapse of the cattle and beef trade over the last 12 months and that is something for which I have no responsibility.
