Vol. 276 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Coal and Steel Community.

42.

asked the Minister for Labour if he has made a decision on whether any existing or proposed Irish programme or schemes can be made the subject of applications for aid under the provisions of Article 56 of the Treaty establishing the European Coal and Steel Community.

The best contribution can be made by assistance from Community funds for the establishment of new industries in the areas affected. The area basically affected here in Ireland is Ballingarry.

The Industrial Credit Company in association with the Industrial Development Authority, have applied through the Department of Industry and Commerce, for a global loan of two million units of account, under Article 56 of the Treaty, to be used in financing industrial projects recommended by the Industrial Development Authority which will provide alternative employment opportunities for redundant coal miners in the region of Ballingarry. The prospects are for the establishment of four small industries in the area.
