Vol. 276 No. 13

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Waste Material Recycling.

45.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the action the Government are taking in promoting the recycling of cast-off items in view of the need to save energy and materials.

The Government are engaged in a broad area of activity in promoting the recycling of waste materials taking into account the necessity to conserve energy and raw materials. The Institute for Industrial Research and Standards provide technical advice on recycling and the Industrial Development Authority give financial assistance to suitable projects. In addition, Ireland is participating in international studies on waste management which are seeking to develop and disseminate more advanced technologies for recycling waste. The primary responsibility rests, of course, on industry itself, and, in fact, recycling is already practised to a very substantial degree in a number of our industries.
